Housing Stability is Central to Neighborhood Stability: Here’s Why

Updated: Jul 18, 2023

Ask 10 different people what is the most important thing that a low-income community — particularly the urban poor — need to improve their quality of life, and you’ll probably get 10 different answers.

We believe that there is one need that affects all the others: housing.

The stability that comes from living in the same house continuously grants families the opportunity to flourish in all other areas of life: education, employment, mental and physical health, relational connections, and more.

Families in stable, affordable, safe homes exponentially increase success and stability in other areas of life. If housing is stable, wrap-around services and resources, as described in the chart below, can be accessed by neighbors over an extended period of time.

When Housing Is Stable…

Grove Park Renewal is dedicated to housing first and foremost because it creates the stability necessary for families to holistically flourish: physically, spiritually, emotionally, and relationally.

In addition, we specifically focus on partnerships with sister organizations that have invested significant resources into their programs and physical presence in the Grove Park community. Their focus on a certain geographic area requires that their families stay close by for the long-haul. Therefore, Grove Park Renewal gives priority to providing housing for families connected to sister organizations, giving stability to families, the organizations that serve those families, and the neighborhood as a whole.

Especially now — when jobs are threatened, and school buildings are shuttered — housing insecure families need to know that they can count on having a home today — and tomorrow. The gentrification and displacement occurring in Grove Park, now exacerbated by COVID-19, demands a robust system centered on housing stability and connected wrap-around services.
